Environmental Science

Environmental science is the field of science that studies the interactions of the physical, chemical, and biological components of the environment and also the relationships and effects of these components with the organisms in the environment. The field of environmental science is divided into three main goals, which are to learn (a) How the natural world works (b) To understand how we as humans interact with the environment, and (c) To determine how we affect the environment. The third goal of determining how humans affect the environment also includes finding ways to deal with these effects on the environment.

Related areas of study include environmental studies and environmental engineering. Environmental studies incorporate more of the social sciences for understanding human relationships, perceptions and policies towards the environment. Environmental engineering focuses on design and technology for improving environmental quality in every aspect. Studying environmental science provides you with very specific skills according to your particular course or specialised area. You will also develop a broader set of transferable skills, including:

  • Research and problem-solving skills
  • Competence in developing arguments from scientific, ethical and philosophical perspectives
  • Ability to plan and manage projects
  • Ability to gather, analyse and communicate complex technical data to others
  • Flexibility to work in all kinds of environments, developed through field- work experience
  • Numerical and IT skills, developed through the application of statistics and measurement techniques
  • A broad understanding of local, national and global environmental issues
  • Ecology
  • Geo-science
  • Atmospheric Science
  • Environmental Chemistry

It refers to the studies of organisms and the environment that interacts with each other. Ecologists, who make up a part of environmental scientists, usually tries to find the relations between the population of particular species and the status of the environment and find any co-relations that needs to be drawn between the two. A student studying ecology will study and may or may not come to the conclusion that the population of a species is increasing or decreasing as a result of any issues with the environment. They may also take multiple species of organisms and see if they can find any relation to one another, allowing the scientists to come to a conclusion if the habitat is suitable or not for that species to live in.

It is a branch of environment science that studies the geology, soil science, volcanoes, and the Earth’s crust as they relate to the environment. Soil scientists, physicists, biologists, and geo-morphologists would all take part in the study. Geo -morphologists would study the movement of sediments, biologists would study the impacts of the study to the plants and animals of the immediate environment, physicists would study the light transmission changes in the water, and the soil scientists would make the final calculations on the flow of the water. It is an all-encompassing term that refers to the fields of science dealing with planet Earth.

It refers to the study of the Earth’s atmosphere. It involves the study of the relation of the Earth’s atmosphere to the atmospheres of other systems. The study includes a variety of scientific studies relating to space, astrology and the Earth’s atmosphere - meteorology, pollution, gas emissions, and airborne contaminants. It is also termed as the umbrella of the Earth's atmosphere thus making it an interesting field to pursue one’s higher studies in.

A branch of Environmental Science that studies the chemical and biochemical phenomena that usually occurs in natural places. It studies the changes of chemicals make in the environment, such as contamination of the soil, pollution of the water, degradation of chemicals, and the transport of chemicals upon the plants and animals of the immediate environment. Environmental chemistry helps initially in understanding how the uncontaminated environment works, which chemicals in what concentrations are present naturally, and with what effects. Without this it would be impossible to accurately study the effects humans have on the environment through the release of different chemicals.
